Conditioner
Conditioning is especially important for dry hair, but if you
have oily hair, only apply it to where your natural oil doesn't
normally reach (such as the ends of your hair) to reduce tangles
and split ends.
-
Mayonnaise is a great hair
conditioner, but it does tend to leave a smell, so try
sampling different kinds of mayo to find one that smells
least offensive. Otherwise, people will think that you're
smuggling potato salad. (Some of the best ones are found in
health food stores because the ingredients are usually
simple and natural.)
-
Try making your own
conditioner by mixing an oil high in essential fatty acids (I
love flaxseed oil) with water. Then toss in some lecithin.
(Lecithin is found naturally in dry mustard, eggs, and soy
beans, or you can buy it at health food stores.) Shake it up
until it's creamy (you may need to add a bit more lecithin
if the oil and water won't mix).
-
Let your natural oils do their
job, conditioning. Go a few days without washing your hair.
(This is not a good idea if you use styling products, swim
in salty or chlorinated water, or live in a smoggy city or
near people who smoke. It's also probably not a good idea if
their is a lot of pollen in the air if you or someone who is
often near you has allergies.)
Hair Rinse -
Use vinegar in your rinse water to remove residues left by other hair care products. (Also relieves itchy scalp and reduces dandruff.)
The acid will also create shiny bouncy hair (hair and acid
like each other).
-
For oily hair,
rinse your hair with a lemon juice and water solution. Avoid
using too much lemon juice (start small with just a couple
of tablespoons per cup of water and add more gradually if
necessary). Too much lemon juice will make your hair sticky
and cause lightening (which could create an orange tint in
dark hair). Hairspray -
Citrus juice (especially lemons and limes) act as a hair
spray. The more concentrated it is, the stiffer it is, so
dilute it with water if you want something softer. It will
also lighten your hair (which could create an orange tint in
dark hair), so be careful not to use too much if you don't
want to change your hair color.
- Mix 1 tablespoon of sugar (experiment with different
kinds in crystal form) with 1 cup of boiling water to create
a solution. You can add a bit of oil (any cooking or herbal)
for softness.
