A good way to build your vocabulary is to make a list of words or concepts you commonly use in your writing, and find synonyms for them.
Make sure you know the definitions of each word. Just because two words are synonyms or relate to the same concept doesn't mean that they have the exact meaning or evoke the same feeling (e.g. enormous means very great in size, while tremendous means awe-inspiring size, so something could be enormous but not tremendous), so get out the dictionary. (My favorite dictionary is TheFreeDictionary.com.)
Even if you don't use the exact words on your list, you may find yourself inspired by the list of words.
Here are my word lists. The lists will grow and new lists will be added as I find new words that inspire me.
